ATWATER – Milroy Yankees manager Ryan Rohlik knew a strong start was going to be a difference maker in order for his team to find their way back to the state tournament. The Yankees offense backed that belief up in a powerful way.
Andy Schmidt, Matt Bauer and Nolan Schaeffer combined to hit four home runs to highlight the Yankees’ offense, while Austin Deutz tossed eight strong innings as Milroy punched its ticket to the state tournament with a 9-1 win Sunday.
Rohlik said the first inning was big with how his players came together and played as a unit, and it showed in their ability to produce big-time scoring.
“In the playoffs, it’s huge. Austin did a great job of getting through the inning with no harm done, getting us an opportunity to buy time for Nolan to get here. He literally got out of his car, put his cleats on and Isaac (Schmitt) played the first defensively and Nolan is able to come in and get an at-bat in the inning,” Rohlik said. “You see how important he is later in the game with what he means to our team and how he solidifies the middle of that lineup.
